The speech therapist has set up an email address at
Clearview for Kenn.  She will check his email with him
at least once a week.

Anyone can send him pictures, jokes or just a message
to be read to him.  It is kenn@kenn-info.org

Talk to him about motorcycles and rides,
camping or even hiking.  Make sure you put your
first name and last so that when she reads it she
can tell him.

Kenn is moving to a new Medical Facility

On Monday, March 14, Kenn is scheduled to leave the
UW Hospital, and will be at the Sacred Heart Rehabilitation
Institute in Milwaukee. This facility specializes in the
treatment of brain injuries.

  • Mom went up to the hospital on Fri. 11,05 she kissed dad on the lips and he opened his eyes and kept them open for 10-15min. this is the longest she has seen his eyes open since the accident. She said he's moving his legs and arms around a little and even the nurses have stated they can tell he's stubborn by his reaction to some of the things they try to do for him.
    We have been told he doesn't like to have his teeth brushed and that he tries to bite the toothbrush so the nurse has to struggle with him. When I clipped his finger nails on Sunday of last week mom had to hold his hand still and keep it flat, due to he kept trying to pull away slightly.
    On Sat. 12,05 Mom, Russell, and I went up to the hospital and dad had his eyes half open most of the two hours we were there. He'd close them maybe for 5-10min. and open them for awhile again. He finally relaxed and closed his eyes to sleep just before we left. Dad was coughing up a lot of phlegm tonight which is good. The nurse said they don't have to suction as much, due to he has a good cough and it's helping the phlegm come loose which is a good sign. The nurses all have been saying when they move dad he has his eyes open the whole time and will even turn his head torward one of the nurses. We don't know how much he is able to focus, but at least he can tell people are there helping him and working with him.
    I remember the Doctor in the TLC South on third floor say just after the accident that dad would have to be hooked up to machines for the rest of his life and to be ready for the worst, but look at him prove the
    doctor wrong. He only has his trake, the nutrition feeding tube, and the catheter hooked up. All the rest has been removed and the trake may even come out soon if he can handle it. He's on very little medicine from what he use to be and he's able to have the radio (WNWC) on for stimulation. Dad was on very little stimulation for most of the month until now that he's out of the ICU. We are seeing a little improvement, but it's all a miracle just the same. We are looking forward to the next step and seeing how the new environment will help him respond to himself and the people around him. Thank you for all the prayers their
    helping.
    Also we were all talking and would prefer that no one mention the accident around dad or in the close area of him until the doctor and nurses have said it's ok, due to this could cause some serious shock to dad knowing he was throwen from the truck. If he talks about it when he wakes up or if the doctor or nurses feel he's ready to discuss this then it will be ok. We ask that you respect this wish for the continual good progress. We are trying to talk as positive to dad as possible and are trying not to discuss even the severe brain damage in his presents due to it could cause a block in his positive thinking and are trying to be as
    positive as possible. Thanks. Thank you again for the wonderful prayers we need them. Keep on bringing them we love them.

  • We had a good day with dad last night. Dad looked at his sister and dad almost the whole time they were there visiting at the hospital. His sister even had him moving his mouth a couple of times as if he was trying to talk. Dad then started tracing a friends thumb that came up to visit him, with his thumb and pointer finger. He then started squeezing her fingers together slightly. I then took dad's hand and he did the same to mine. Mom tried to get him to do it with both hands, but he only did it with his right. Mom then took his right hand and he held her's applying presser and looked at her a little. Mom said dad even seemed to be moving his pointer finger to the beat of the music when his sister and mom's sister started singing with the radio to a song they all new. We we're talking with his nurse about all this and she told us that he likes to have his arms, legs, and fingers moved and that it seems to relax him and help him sleep. I even sat showing dad some pictures last night and he seemed to try to look at them. If it registered I'm not sure. The nurse said he looks at things, but is not blinking the way he needs to yet. They aren't sure what he understands yet and what he doesn't.
    Mom called me today to inform me of how the ride to Sacred heart went. she rode with dad in the ambulance to see how he did and to be with him. She said that dad sat rubbing her finger like yesterday and applied some presser too. She even saw a couple of tears roll down his cheek and his brow creased. She said she wasn't sure if it was from him feeling sad that he was putting her through this or that he was in pain. Mom said he was very tired after the ride, but had kept his eyes open during most of the 1 1/2 drive. She said they checked him in and he slept for most of the day. Dad has a bigger private room then at UW and can decorate it the way we want it to look for him. He can now receive fresh flowers and actually enjoy them in his room. At Sacred heart Rehab they will be working with him every day getting his body functions working properly again and to one day be able to go home we pray. He will even have a speech therapist working one on one with him to regain his voice. The nurse told mom they are hoping to take the trach out as soon as possible and get dad to breath through his mouth again. The racio is 10-12 patients to 1-2 nurses and 1-2 cna's. This is better then most places were it's 12-15 patients with double this per wing (due to most places the patient has to share a room) to 2 cna's and 1 nurse divided between the whole wing at most regular rehab places. It's very comforting for all of us family to know this place specializes in brain injury. We can't wait to hear what his first words will be. Thank you again for all the prayers. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all of your prayers and believing that God still does miracles.
